The Bedlington is an unforgettable breed. His unique lamb-like appearance will capture your interest and his charming personality will capture your heart. This unusual breed originated in Northern England and was once known as the Rothbury Terrier. Although he has developed into an elegant, gentle-mannered show dog and companion, his origins were those of a true working terrier. He went to ground after vermin, killed rats in the coal mines, and his great speed enabled him to hunt rabbits.
The Bedlington today is an ideal house pet. He is a loyal, devoted friend who has lots of love to give. His coat is non-shedding which makes him a good choice for allergy sufferers. Because of his handy size (Height 15 ½ to 16 ½ inches, weight 17-23 lbs) he is equally suited to city or country living. He is full of spunk and loves to play. As his appearance might not first indicate, this is a very hardy dog of great endurance who enjoys long hikes. He is not yappy but is an alert guard dog. Bedlingtons usually get along well with other dogs.
Bedlingtons are good subjects for Obedience work as they are intelligent, quick to learn and eager to please. At times the terrier stubborness may surface, but firmness and consistency in training is the key.
Bedlington coat colour may be blue, blue
and tan, liver, liver and tan, sandy, or sandy and tan. Puppies are
born very dark and lighten as they mature. This breed requires regular
grooming to maintain its good looks. They should be brushed and
combed several times a week, and need to be clipped
about every two months.
